How To Apply Window Frosting Vinyl?

Before we start, you get two types of applications a wet application and a dry application. Please ask your supplier which method your vinyl is designed for, in this instance because we are applying frosted vinyl we will be instructing on the wet method but please note not all frosted vinyl is applied with wet application method but it is the most common method used.

What you need before you get started:

  • 1 x Spray bottle.
  • 1 x Dish-wash liquid /Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo.
  • 1 x Window scraper.
  • 1 x Window cleaning squeegee.
  • 1 x Application squeegee.
  • 1 x Cutting blade.
  • 1 x Metal ruler.
  • 1 x Window frosted vinyl.
  • 2 x Old towels.

Prepare the windows:

Fill the spray bottle - 500ml/0,528qt - with water and add about half a teaspoon of dish-wash liquid or Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo, shake to mix the liquid solution.

Move all curtains or blinds out of the way.

Lay one towel in the window sill or on the floor in front of the window.

Spray the window liberally with the liquid solution and wash the window using the window cleaning squeegee sponge side. After the window has been soaped up from the window cleaning squeegee use the window scraper - always us a new blade to avoid scratching - and scrap any tiny debris of the window. If the liquid solution starts to dry a bit respray and keep scraping the window till all of the window has been scrapped.

Spray the window again with the liquid solution and wash the window using the window cleaning squeegee sponge side an squeegee the window with the squeegee side to remove the liquid solution. Use the other towel to wipe the squeegee end of the window cleaning squeegee as you remove the soapy liquid from the window, finally you put the towel over your finger and run it around the window edge, making sure you wipe any dirt or debris away. Now your window is ready to apply the vinyl to.

Why is it important to have a very clean window? Well the fact of the matter is you want the best bond you can have with the window and the only real way is to make sure the window is as clean as it can be.

Please Note: Different types of window frames might have specific issues associated with them.

  • Wooden Frames: Varnish and wood filler can be a issue.
  • Aluminum Frames: The rubber gasket can be an issue is its not installed correctly leaving a uneven edge that you now need to trim around.
  • Steel Frames: The putty used to keep the window in can either be too old causing chunks to come off or debris to pull under the vinyl or too new which can leave oil stains or moves when trimming the edge.

Applying the window frosted vinyl to the window:

I will assume for this example that you have someone assisting you with the application so I will refer to the assistant as the assistant and you the applicator. An we would be applying a basic piece of frosted vinyl without a design cut into it.

Place one towel in the window sill and the other on the floor in front of the window.

Make sure your tools are in reaching distance to where you will be working.

The assistant will hold the vinyl with the grey shiny side facing them and the adhesive (Backing paper) side facing the applicator.

The applicator will peel off the backing paper just from the one top corner so the assistant can hold the vinyl with only two fingers. The applicator will fold back the backing paper away from the top of the vinyl till they reach the other corner so the assistant can grab both corners.

Once the assistant has a grip on both corners the applicator can use the spray bottle and will start to peel back the backing paper while spraying the liquid solution till they have completely removed the backing paper.

The applicator will then spray the window liberally with the solution.

Then the applicator will get the vinyl from the assistant and place it onto the window, the vinyl will naturally stick to the window. Slide one of the vinyls sides to an edge so that you have a straight edge and less trimming to do.

When the applicator is happy with the placement they use a felt squeegee to push out the liquid solution from between the glass and the vinyl. The best way to start would be to run the squeegee across the top of the vinyl then down the middle like a big T. Thereafter they squeegee from the middle section out to the edges and do this till all the liquid has been pushed out.

There might be a small amount of vinyl overlap which would need to be trimmed off. The applicator can use a plastic squeegee and run the squeegee edge along the window edge making sure to get the vinyl into the edge, then they use a steel ruler and the cutting blade to trim off the extra vinyl. Always use a sharp blade or the blade might tear into or crease the vinyl.

Then the applicator runs the felt squeegee along the edges of the vinyl to get out any of the last parts of liquid.

Lastly, the newly applied vinyl gets a light liquid solution spray and is gentle rubbed down, removing any liquid streaks.

Please Note: The weather can play a big part in the process.

  • The sun is a factor when applying vinyl to your window, it will cause the glass to get hot and the liquid solution to dry quickly, so spray as much liquid solution you feel will be enough. If there isn't enough solution the vinyl will stick and you wont be able to move the vinyl into place.
  • The sun also cause the vinyl to start to stretch and deform due to heat so don't rub the liquid out too hard.
  • Because the sun causes the liquid to dry quickly you need to squeegee or rub out the liquid solution quicker that you usually would.
  • If its too cold the vinyl might not stick correctly and the edges will curl up or in some cases the vinyl might even come right off the window. - Please check the specifications of your vinyl's heat tolerances.
