What Is Window Frosting?

 There are three types of so called window frosting:

 

1.Window Frosting Vinyl

What is frosted vinyl? - This is a non-permanent vinyl sticker that is design to be applied onto windows. 

What designs do you get? - You can find frosted vinyl in an assortment of designs within the vinyl itself and you can also have designs cut out of the vinyl for a more bespoke option. 

How long does the product last? - Frosted vinyls lifespan on a window depends on the manufacturer, how the vinyl was applied and the general environment, which all play a part in its life cycle. 

What makes frosted vinyl so special? - Frosted vinyl is non-permanent meaning that after a few years you can remove the vinyl if need be, this is a great option for people renting as its not permanent. Once applied to your window it obviously gives privacy but also offers a security barrier if the window breaks, keeping all the glass in place. The vinyl helps to regulate heat and cold within the home and it's designed for direct sunlight, heat and moisture.

What is the downside of frosted vinyl? - If you do not care for the window frosting correctly you could scratch it or rip it and oil, animal mucus or animal saliva will embed in the vinyl and will be almost impossible to remove from the vinyl. Easy to clean and keeps your window looking clean for longer.



2. Spray On Window Frosting

What is spray on window frosting? - This is a non-permanent aerosol that is similar to spray paint but instead of painting your window you spray a layer of an opaque lacquer onto your window.

What designs do you get? - You can use a stencil to get a design but that's the only type of design you would get out of this window frosting option.

How long does the product last? - Spray on window frosting doesn't last long as the lacquer's lifespan on a window depends on the care given to keep it on the window.

What makes spray on window frosting so special? - Its non-permanent and you can remove the spay if need be, this is a great option for people renting as its not permanent but it's used more as a novelty than an actual long term solution.

What is the downside of frosted vinyl? - When you spray the frosting onto your windows you will not get a n even look throughout the window as some areas will have more lacquer than other areas. It scratches of quiet easily and if you want to keep the window frosted you cannot wash the window.

 

3. Etched Glass

What is etched glass? - This is a permanent option for a frosted look on glass and a method of sandblasting or chemical etching needs to take place in order to give the frosted look. The sandblasting and chemical will remove about 0.5mm of your glass to get the frosted look basicly eating into your window.

What designs do you get? - Your design options are limited and dependent on if you will be sandblasting or chemical etching each one has its limitations on designs.

How long does the product last? - Once you have etched your window it forever or until you change the glass. There is no going back as its a permanent process, if you would like a clear glass window again you would need to install a new one.

What makes etched windows so special? - It gives the home character and a depth that vinyl and spray on will never give you.

What is the downside of etched windows? - Once you have etched your window it forever or until you change the glass. The designs are limited and the process can reduce the strength of your window.

How To Apply Window Frosting Vinyl?

Before we start, you get two types of applications a wet application and a dry application. Please ask your supplier which method your vinyl is designed for, in this instance because we are applying frosted vinyl we will be instructing on the wet method but please note not all frosted vinyl is applied with wet application method but it is the most common method used.   What you need before you get started: 1 x Spray bottle. 1 x Dish-wash liquid /Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo. 1 x Window scraper. 1 x Window cleaning squeegee. 1 x Application squeegee. 1 x Cutting blade.  1 x Metal ruler. 1 x Window frosted vinyl. 2 x Old towels.   Prepare the windows: Fill the spray bottle - 500ml/0,528qt - with water and add about half a teaspoon of dish-wash liquid or Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo, shake to mix the liquid solution.  Move all curtains or blinds out of the way.
